Young people in Melton Mowbray – many facing acute difficulties at home – are being boosted by the work of the Melton Learning Hub.

The organisation, which operates out of three sites in the Leicestershire town, is one of the largest alternative education providers in the county and has an outstanding track record in helping students realise their potential, often after the state school system has written them off!
Food is a key ingredient in its success and FareShare East Midlands has been working closely with The Hub since 2016, providing it with weekly food deliveries.
“Our relationship with FareShare has gone from strength to strength,” said Centre Manager, Sarah Cox. “We have found the strong links we have built to be a real life-line for us, our students and their families. And we are delighted with things.
“It’s hard to believe that so many people, through no fault of their own, struggle to feed themselves and their children. But this is the stark reality of modern day living in so many communities. And, in the Melton area, we have many young people who come from families in need.
"Through our relationship with FareShare, we can offer around 200 meals for young people a week, from breakfast to curries and pasta bakes. The deliveries we get each week cover 99% of the costs for our food. The variety of food allows the children to try things that they just wouldn't get at home for a variety of reasons.
"We can now offer protein rich food – lots of types of chicken, minced beef, joints of beef, fruit and vegetables – meaning we can now offer proper roasts! We get smoothies too which they love.
"Eighty five percent of the children here are entitled to free school meals. They love coming here for a meal."
Working in groups of no more than six, tutors spend time supporting learners to realise their full potential whilst also having time to address issues that might have arisen in their lives.
The Hub is a charity, which is run on a not-for-profit basis. This means all available funds are invested in learners and resources.
“Thanks to FareShare East Midlands, we are now able to make huge savings on our food bill – and reinvest these savings in our activities. The money we save is now being used to support our students in a variety of front-line ways. And we are extremely grateful to the regional team for providing us with a wonderful service – and an abundance of wonderful food.”
