As the cost of living crisis escalates, the Bishop of Leicester is aiming to raise funds and make a substantial difference to the lives of the most vulnerable people in Leicestershire. The Bishop has chosen FareShare Midlands as the beneficiary charity of the Bishop’s Lent Appeal 2022.

More than 8.4 million people in the UK are living in ‘deep poverty’, struggling to afford everyday essentials including food. At the same time over 6.7 million tonnes of food goes to waste every year. Across Leicestershire alone 73,893 children are growing up in poverty, food insecurity and inadequate housing. That’s 73,893 children who begin life disadvantaged and often go without food, clothing or basic supplies.

Lent is the time in the Church calendar that follows Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) and runs until Easter. Many Christians use the weeks of Lent as an opportunity for reflection, prayer and sometimes fasting, remembering the 40 days and nights that Jesus fasted which are recorded in the Bible.

As the region’s largest food redistribution charity, FareShare Midlands redistributes good quality, in-date surplus food which would otherwise go to waste. The Charity turns an environmental problem into a social solution. Last year, FareShare Midlands redistributed 6,686 tonnes of food, helping over 550 frontline groups provide 16 million meals. The Charity saved these groups £2.5 million on food (so they could spend it elsewhere), and on average this food reaches 60,000 people each week. In addition, FareShare Midlands is building on its overall mission to fight hunger and tackle food waste, by creating opportunities through their employability programmes. With an ambition by 2024 to support 400 people into vocational training, placements or paid work.

Martyn Snow, the Bishop of Leicester, said “This year I’ve made FareShare the focus of my Lent Appeal and I hope that people will consider supporting this excellent charity in the run up to Easter. It has a huge impact not only for the individuals concerned but also for their communities; bringing people together to share food together.”

Simone Connolly, Director of FareShare Midlands said “We are deeply honoured to be chosen by the Bishop of Leicester as the recipient for this year’s Appeal. As life starts to return to normal post-COVID19, unfortunately many vulnerable people are worse off than ever. The cost of living crisis is pushing families further into poverty, with many facing a regular decision between buying food or other daily necessities. With the support of the Bishop and the Lent Appeal, we can grow our network of members and reach even more desperate, hungry families with nutritious surplus foods”.
