Bally Hayer, Junior Organiser of Mapperley Golf Club in Nottinghamshire, initially took on a challenge of 1 million steps in 50 days to raise money for the Junior section of Mapperley Golf Club and FareShare Midlands. However, his growing ambition and eagerness to create a bigger impact brought up a conversation between himself and Jon Newham, Head Professional of Mapperley Golf Club.
Jon said, “Let’s have a challenge within the challenge”. So, the idea was discussed, and the challenge born: to walk from Mapperley Golf Club to Rufford Park Golf Club and back again, whilst carrying golf clubs.
On September 9th, the two of them, along with a member of the club, set out at 6am on their 47.4 mile journey with their golf clubs on their backs. 22 hours later, on the following day at 4am, they had completed the challenge and raised over £4,000 in total, with £2,354 of this going to FareShare Midlands.
When asked why they chose to fundraise for FareShare Midlands Bally said, “We have always been interested in the charity, we have our own charity Fairway to Ride. But we wanted to choose an organisation that would allow us to do more for people and specifically children. This problem in our country of people going hungry is unnerving, it shouldn’t be happening, and it just feels wrong”. Bally adds, “we heard the figures of how many children were facing hunger, and then Marcus Rashford’s campaign brought further light to the issue. We realised that not only should we do something, be that we had to do something, and so after learning about FareShare’s work, we chose to support our local FareShare”.
The members of Mapperley Golf Club supported the fundraiser greatly, Bally said, “we received a lot of support, and a large portion of the donations came from the members, for which we are very thankful”.
Sue Spare, Fundraising Manager said “on behalf of FareShare Midlands we would like to say a huge thank you to Bally & Jon and everyone who supported the members at Mapperley Golf Club for their fundraising. The total money raised for FareShare Midlands equates to 9,416 meals and has helped support vulnerable men, women and children across the Midlands in these unprecedented times”.
