Over £3,000 raised for FareShare Midlands by Heart of England Co-Operative General Manager, Steve Browne, who took a New Year’s Day Dip in the North Sea.

While some kicked off the New Year with an early start and a fresh page in the annual planner, and others with a lie-in and a fry up… Steve Browne started 2022 with a daring dip to fundraise for FareShare Midlands!

Steve took to the North Sea near his hometown of Blyth, Northumberland, on New Year’s Day, to fight hunger, tackle waste and raise money. Having set a target of only £500, Steve was thrilled to exceed this total by 644% - raising an incredible £3,190!
We are so grateful for Steve’s bravery (and madness!), as this money will provide over 12,700 meals for vulnerable people across the Midlands, whose struggles with food poverty and isolation have only been worsened by the continuing Covid pandemic.

Steve Browne is the General Manager of the Heart of England Co-operative Society’s Food Division, which operates a network of 35 Food stores across Coventry, Warwickshire, South Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. He said:
“FareShare is a cause close to my heart. Not only does it play a significant part in the ongoing fight against hunger but its work is vital in helping to protect the environment.
“With more food being shared among those most in need and less food waste being sent to landfill to rot, there are less harmful gases being released into our atmosphere. It really is an excellent cause which brings multiple benefits.”

Simone Connolly, Director of FareShare Midlands, said:
“Steve has shown that his courage matches the size of his heart, with his freezing dip on New Year’s Day.  The 12,700 meals his fundraising will create, will make such a difference to vulnerable local families, who continue to struggle with food poverty and the impact of COVID 19.  Bravo, Steve!”.

A further £1,638 has been raised by the Heart of England Co-op through their partnership with Too Good To Go – a mobile app designed to help users pick up cheap bargains and reduce food waste, and poverty, in the UK. Through Too Good To Go, the Society fills ‘Magic Bags’ with surprise goodies approaching their best before dates, which shoppers are able to buy. During December the Society sold £1,638 Magic Bags to customers, matching the sale of every bag with a £1 donation to FareShare.

Thank you Steve and Heart of England Coop!
