The Love Your Neighbour Hub was launched during the COVID19 lockdown. It is run by St Luke’s Church and located in Birmingham. The Hub’s volunteers coordinate social action projects and deliver resources to the surrounding communities to meet local needs and show love in action.

On Wednesdays, the team make deliveries to people in crisis. These emergency food parcels contain meals for a family for 5 days, and they deliver multiple parcels across the city to those who struggle with access outside of their homes. The Hub can also provide hygiene essentials including nappies and toiletries.

In addition, Love Your Neighbour runs a Community Shop, with shelves and fridges filled with surplus food from FareShare Midlands. Each Thursday, around 80 people come to the Church and pay £3 for their weekly shop. They have the opportunity to pick 10 items including meat, fish and cheese, plus unlimited fruit, vegetables and bread. While they wait in the Colmore Coffee Café (located inside the Church), they chat to each other, offering support, a real sense of community and a respite from loneliness. When their financial circumstances have improved, some beneficiaries have paid for other’s to shop. Overall, the Church delivers approximately 1,200 meals per week.

Furthermore, the team run a different community project every day. Colmore Coffee runs regular craft sessions with a hot lunch for a really low price. There is a ‘Stay and Play’ every Friday morning, and music sessions for parents and babies. Love Your Neighbour partners with Christians Against Poverty to run their Job Club and Debt Centre, key parts of getting people out of poverty. The Church also has a sensory room for children and adults with disabilities, which is used throughout the week.

Millie Ferguson, Community Worker said “the surplus food we receive from FareShare Midlands benefits so many members of our local community. Unfortunately, due to the recent increases in the cost of living, we have seen more families the past few weeks – and people who hadn’t been for a long time are coming back”.
