FareShare works with hundreds of organisations across the food industry to obtain their surplus ingredients, using this food to supply our network of charities across the UK.

With unprecedented increases in energy prices and the associated business operating costs, the external environment continues to challenge our ambitions to support the most vulnerable members of our local communities. After much deliberation, in April FareShare Midlands made the difficult decision to consolidate the number of sites that we currently operate from, which unfortunately means closing our Lincoln and Holmewood sites at the end of June.
While this is understandably a tough decision, we are confident that this will improve our efficiency, drive down costs and help strengthen our overall financial position and long-term sustainability. Surviving the current cost of living crisis, combined with the impact of the global food crisis, is our number one priority.
We are now focused on ensuring the transition of servicing from the Lincoln and Holmewood sites is as convenient and stress-free for our Community Food Members as we can make it. Alongside that, we are offering as much support as possible to staff and volunteers affected by the site closures, exploring internal redeployment opportunities and providing help with securing alternative positions if required.
We are communicating with our CFMs to explain and agree the next steps. We are meeting with organisations like The Lincolnshire Food Partnership and Derbyshire County Council to talk about ideas for supporting their local communities going forward. We are fully committed to providing the same level of service to as many of our existing CFMs as possible, using the reduced number of sites, and minimising any impact on current food supply.
We remain a Midlands-wide organisation, proud to work alongside around frontline charities and community groups across the Midlands to get food where it is urgently needed. We will continue to explore opportunities to grow our partnerships to benefit our communities, and build on the excellent work performed by these sites over the past years.

“Arriving at the decision to close operating sites has been incredibly difficult. During COVID-19 we took on several sites to cope with the sudden and sharp increases in food coming into the FareShare network. However, due to the current problematic food landscape that we’re now facing and unprecedented costs, we’ve had to evaluate our operating sites and adjust. With over 67,000 vulnerable people relying on the service and support that we provide every single week, we have to adapt to ensure that we remain a stable, viable and sustainable organisation.
My heart goes out to those that will be most impacted by this decision. We are doing all we can to support them through these challenging times. My thoughts are also with the many organisations struggling to survive in the voluntary sector, many of whom are also having to make tough decisions so that they remain viable for those they serve.”
This is a challenging time for FareShare Midlands, impacting everyone in some form or another, but especially those personally affected by this news.
