FareShare - the UK's biggest charity fighting hunger and food waste - is calling on farmers, food producers and retailers in the Midlands to help get good-to-eat food, which may otherwise go to waste, to its network of over 500 charities.
The Spring Budget failed to acknowledge the soaring levels of food insecurity across the UK.
FareShare's network partners across the region are struggling to keep up with unprecedented levels of demand from the charities they support. Without much needed additional government funding, FareShare and its network are relying on the food industry in the Midlands to provide an essential boost.
FareShare works with the food industry to redistribute good-to-eat surplus food to those that need it, via a network of 9,500 charities and community groups nationwide. The food provided by FareShare strengthens communities and brings people together. FareShare is working tirelessly to continuously support the vital services delivered by charities across the Midlands, including food banks and pantries, hostels, refuges, community centres, older people's lunch clubs, school clubs and hospices. Without sufficient food supplies, the day-to-day operations of these charities will be significantly impacted at a time when their support is crucial.
In the Midlands the redistribution of food is co-ordinated by FareShare Midlands, where volumes of food coming into its warehouses across the Midlands have not been enough to keep up with demand, which has skyrocketed due to the cost-of-living crisis.

We are enormously grateful to our existing supporters in the food industry, who continue to do all they can to provide us with surplus food, but sadly demand continues to outstrip supply. Ongoing supply chain issues, the war in Ukraine, and high energy costs are all factors impacting the availability of food surplus for redistribution. However, in all regions across the UK, we desperately need additional food from local sources to help boost our supplies. We are calling on any food suppliers in the Midlands to get in touch with us about getting more food to the people we support and help our charities continue providing vital services in the community".

FareShare Midlands is the region’s largest food redistribution charity. We take good quality surplus food from the food industry and get it to frontline charities all over the Midlands, reaching more than 67,000 vulnerable people every week. We turn an environmental problem into a social solution. Each day we receive good-to-eat surplus food from the food industry. Last year we redistributed over 5,670 tonnes. The food arrives into our warehouses, where it is sorted and stored by our dedicated teams of staff and volunteers. The supplies are then redistributed to over 500 charities and community groups across the Midlands, including community centres, homeless shelters and children’s breakfast/school holiday clubs. These local organisations turn the food into food parcels, affordable shopping and delicious meals for vulnerable people. Last year we delivered enough food to create more than 13 million meals. As well as food, the organisations we supply provide vital support to people often facing challenging circumstances and living in poverty.

Government funding
FareShare received a government grant of £1.9m in 2019, as part of a government trial to tackle food waste. The scheme helps to cover the extra costs to small-scale farmers, growers and producers of redistributing their good-to-eat waste food, rather than let it go to waste. The trial resulted in 85% more fruit and vegetables reaching frontline charities and community groups. But government funding ended in 2020, and despite widespread calls, is not currently funding food redistribution in the UK. FareShare is asking for a new grant of £25m, which would allow it to redistribute an additional 100 million meals to vulnerable families – nutritious food that otherwise goes to waste.
