It’s World Food Day on Sunday 16 October 2022 and FareShare Midlands in Lincolnshire, the local branch of the UK's top food redistribution charity, is urgently calling on the good people of Lincolnshire for ongoing help.
“We can hardly keep pace with demand,” says Simone Connolly, CEO. “We’ve gone from supplying two food banks to 42 in just one year.”
FareShare Midlands gets good-to-eat surplus food to more than 60,000 vulnerable people across the Midlands. Currently more than 2 million tonnes of good-to-eat surplus food is wasted annually in the UK, the equivalent of 1.3 billion meals.
Meanwhile, up to 10 million people in the UK, including 2.5m children, are in food insecurity, which means they are skipping meals and struggle to get enough to eat.
The pandemic and the cost of living crisis have dramatically increased the number of people in food insecurity, even in the food basket of the nation - Lincolnshire produces an astonishing 20% of the UK’s food.
“We need more food,” says Simone, “and we need more volunteers to help us distribute it. Lincolnshire folk are famous for their generous-heartedness - so today, we’re asking retailers, farmers, growers, producers for food and also those with a bit of time to spare to help out.”
